Replacing the Blade on an Ideal 1071 Kutrimmer

I'm writing this blog to save you the trouble of the hoops I had to jump through. The blade on your Ideal 1071 needs sharpening? It's a helluva battle trying to find someone to do it. Not to mention, the manual is absolutely no help when it comes to blade replacement itself. I ended up purchasing replacement blades to install while I continue the search for someone who will sharpen the old ones.

Okay, for blade replacement: the manual simply states to email this person in Germany. That's it. So, I did. And the person in Germany told me to email MBM. MBM did send along some unclear instructions on how to do it. Now - in this process you'll inevitably end up with stripped screws because they are cheap, which is another predicament in itself because you just know the next time you go to replace this blade you're going to be scared that it might just end up being the last. So now, replacement screws? Oh, there's a website for that and they charge literally $20 a screw. And you'll need 10. $200??? That's what I paid for the replacement blades alone. After a deep dive I was able to find a diagram with part numbers and information on these screws, along with the exact screw for the tension spring. This diagram has the part numbers - but after much more digging, I found the actual sizes and types of screws which are, like, a dollar each. Links to everything below.

Tips and measurements:

Bolts on knife carrier: 11/16”
8 mm for base knife interior nuts

If upper blade is too close to lower blade after installation (scraping), knock the knife carrier bolt with a rubber mallet to push it outwards.
