Artist Spotlight: Kirsten Cooner

Welcome to our fifth Artist Spotlight featuring Virginia artist Kirsten Cooner! Every other month, we interview a fellow creative to showcase their work and ideas, and peek into their very own Lake Michigan Book Press sketchbook. What is your background in art? I won’t bore you with stories about how I began working with art at a young age, because in many ways I didn’t. My childhood was spent tinkering with my dad’s woodworking scraps and mother’s craft closet. The concept of working as an artist was never presented as an option for me, and when I started art school...

Artist Spotlight: Nolan Flynn

Welcome to our fourth Artist Spotlight featuring Kalamazoo artist Nolan Flynn! Every other month, we interview a fellow creative to showcase their work and ideas, and peek into their very own Lake Michigan Book Press sketchbook. At what age did you know that you would pursue art professionally? What helped spur this passion, and how did you go about making it a reality?  There was never really a point at which I decided to pursue art, not one distinguished pivotal time. I can never really think of a time I didn't do art. My wonderful mother was an art teacher and...

Wut. Another book press?

Wut. Another book press?

Yes, ladies and gentleman, another book press has arrived at the Lake Michigan Book Press studio. Before you ask, no, this was not a 'planned' addition. She was a surprise. Now, I love making these posts because there's always something a bit interesting to share about these antiques. And I'm going to ramble for a bit but stay with me here. You see, I was at home minding my own business when an email popped in from my co-worker, Katie, at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center. She mentioned a man in the UP (upper peninsula of Michigan) called and had a book...

Artist Spotlight: Bethany Houston

Welcome to our third Artist Spotlight featuring Michigan artist Bethany Houston! Every other month, we interview a fellow creative to showcase their work and ideas, and peek into their very own Lake Michigan Book Press sketchbook. You grew up in St. Joseph, MI - a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan. While small, this community seems to foster the arts being home to both the Krasl Art Center and Box Factory for the Arts. Would you say living in such an environment gave you a starting point for becoming the artist you are today? How so? I’m so...

Our fourth press just arrived, an Aamel book press!

Our fourth press just arrived, an Aamel book press!

After releasing our newest size book, the HUGE sketchbook, we needed a press that could actually handle a book this massive. The two cast iron presses were too small, and our handmade wooden press, shown below, was large enough but just barely - about a 1/16th of an inch stuck out of each side. Not to mention filling it with more than one at a time was impossible.  Serviceable, but not preferable.    So as usual, I took to Craigslist hoping to find a large press - it wasn't looking pretty. There were some pretty busted presses showing up...
